Frequently Asked Questions

Product, technical and commercial questions · CAS 540-63-6

1.

Product & Specifications

What grades of 1,2-ethanedithiol are available?

Two specifications are supplied: a reagent grade with a purity of not less than 98.5% (GC) intended for research and synthesis, and an industrial grade with the same purity limit that is also supplied against pharmaceutical requirements for pilot and production scale use. Custom purities can be discussed against a specification agreed in writing.

Which analytical documents accompany each shipment?

Every lot is released with a Certificate of Analysis reporting GC purity, water content and appearance. A Safety Data Sheet and Technical Data Sheet are available for download from the Product & Inquiry page, and lot-specific documents are provided with the commercial offer.

What packaging sizes are offered?

Reagent grade is supplied in 100 mL, 500 mL and 1 L bottles. Industrial grade is supplied in 5 L and 25 L containers, 200 L drums and IBC totes. Packaging is selected according to the route, quantity and destination.

How should the product be stored?

Store sealed in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area away from oxidising agents and sources of ignition. Because the thiols oxidise slowly in air, opened containers should be blanketed with inert gas and used within the recommended period.

Can a specification be tailored to our process?

Specification adjustments such as tighter purity limits, water content or a specific colour range can be discussed. Final acceptance criteria are recorded in the supply agreement so both parties work against the same release specification.

Technical & Applications

Why is 1,2-ethanedithiol used for carbonyl protection?

The two adjacent thiol groups condense with carbonyl compounds to form 1,3-dithiolanes, cyclic dithioacetals that resist nucleophilic and basic conditions. The protecting group is later removed under mild oxidative or mercury-mediated conditions.

How does EDT function in quantum dot passivation?

EDT displaces native long-chain ligands on the nanocrystal surface and binds through both sulfur donors. The short, rigid bidentate linkage improves charge transport between adjacent nanocrystals while maintaining colloid stability.

What role does it play in solid-phase peptide synthesis?

It acts as a scavenger in trifluoroacetic acid cleavage cocktails, intercepting reactive carbocations generated from protecting groups. This limits alkylation of sensitive residues such as tryptophan and methionine during global deprotection.

How is it used for heavy metal capture?

The soft sulfur donors bind soft metal ions such as mercury, silver and thallium with high affinity. EDT is therefore grafted onto solid supports and metal-organic frameworks to produce adsorbents for water treatment.

Is the compound compatible with standard laboratory equipment?

It is handled with standard inert-atmosphere glassware and glovebox techniques. Because it attacks some elastomers and generates strong odours, PTFE or glass components and effective ventilation are recommended.

Ordering & Shipping

How do I request a quotation?

Complete the quotation form on the Product & Inquiry page with the required grade, quantity and destination port. The form records your requirement and the commercial team follows up with a formal offer.

What is the typical response time?

Enquiries are normally acknowledged within one business day, and detailed offers follow within 24 business hours for standard grades and packaging combinations.

Which Incoterms are supported?

Ex Works, FOB, CIF and CIP terms can be quoted. The correct term is confirmed in the offer according to the destination and the buyer's preferred logistics arrangement.

Is the product classified as dangerous goods for transport?

Yes. EDT is classified as a flammable liquid with acute toxicity hazards and is shipped under the appropriate UN packing group with the packaging and documentation required for the route.

Do you supply documentation for customs clearance?

A commercial invoice, packing list, Certificate of Analysis, Safety Data Sheet and the applicable transport documentation are provided with each shipment to support clearance at the destination.
